The W does not stand for Weight

Have you ever wondered what the W stands for in oil? Or, what the W stands for in George W. Bush? Fleet Core can help you with both. The W in oil does not stand for weight even though approximately 90% of people in our industry think it is. More importantly 99.9% of the world could really care less — and I don’t blame them. So, what does the W stand for? The answer is Winter. In a 5W-30 for example, the number before the W describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the better the oil’s cold temperature and cold start performance. The number after the W describes how thick the oil is at the engine’s normal operating temperature.

W = Winter

And for our 43rd President of the United States it stands for Walker. Why are we talking about Oil and President Bush? They’re both pretty slick and George also loves oil. Please hold your applause. Another useful blog from Fleet Core Inc. See you soon!
